    It's a love hate relationship. A precious few manage to get to the successfully published stage, but for most we're lucky to get it to a 'printed of sort' stage. I spent better part of 10 years working on my would-be solo game. I even made the mistake of signing an agreement with a so-called publisher (Golden Bell Entertainment or whatever BS they're going by now) - I've got the contract. That whining aside, here I am, slowly prodding away at a 5th revision in hopes of finally getting something worthy of giving away for little to nothing (contract BS be damned) via RPGDrivethru. 'course, it often takes days, even weeks to see a completed page. At this rate it'll still be years away. But, if it's your dream, pursuit it with everything you can. Perhaps you'll be the next Eric Bloat of Bloat Games.

    'If a little bit of something is good, then a lot must be better!' This is a real mentality when it comes to herbs, and some of the herbalists I've gotten information from have been very, very serious when they say that with some herbs, you can munch as much as you want---parsley, for example, or any one of the many herbs that are both food and medicine. But there are other herbs, such as goldenseal, where a little goes a very long way indeed, so don't overdo it! So I like that this was emphasized. Chicory does, indeed, grow in Utah---but I've only ever seen it in the mountains, not down in the more desert-y valley floors. 'There's a difference between being edible and being a tasty edible': some people might disagree, but I don't think dandelions are very tasty. :) When it comes to nettle, there are people who make *cloth* out of it! Specifically the fibers inside the stalk, but still.

    I dislike the close minded nature of designers to think there are 3 pillars (Combat, Explore, Social) (or in D&D 3.0+ Combat Combat Combat). There can be more than 3 pillars. My ttrpg has 5. 6 if you run the cyberpunk version. You could argue it isnt 5, it is 4, but meh. Each of the 5 subsystems have 2 skill types with 1 Attribute & 4 skills in each type. This doesnt include the Magic system, but that isn't a gameplay system or gameplay facet. The magic types are like skill types, but apply to different facets or even overlap facets. 1. Combat 2. Social 3. Travel (Hexcrawl & Survival / Camping) 4. Information (Exploration & Investigation) 5. Movement (Stealth, Chase/Escapes, & Obstacles) Overcoming Obstacles could be considered Exploration, but Chase scenes? Ehhh. Exploration could include all information, but when you're lumping Exploration in with everything to do with Investigation, Information, Obstacles, and Stealth? That's a lot when it already has a lot to it without those things. Then you add Travel to exploration too? That's a lot crammed in there. Meanwhile Combat is a facet that is absolutely singular in nature and consists of only variant forms of Combat (Mass Battles, Duels, Skirmishes, Calvary, etc.) Social is also singular in nature. But everything else that isnt Social or Combat os crammed in Exploration. This is so silly and close minded. And it makes game design in a box. So I dislike this mindset of "the 3 facets".

    • @nowayjosedaniel
      @nowayjosedaniel 9 місяців тому

      I much prefer rhetoric like "Think of gameplay facets that can have their own system design. An example os the 3 tropes in D&D even though D&D really only has two facets (Combat & Skill Rolls). Oh also, I was wrong and apparently Roleplay is the 3rd facet, not Social scenes. In this example. Which goes to show how designers dont even have the 3 facets consistent among themselves. Some say it is Roleplay while others Social scenes. Yet there is a big difference there. Roleplay is its own thing, and I guess it could include social encounters for bad designs like D&D which dont faciliate social scenes at all, but for games that DO have social mechanics the systems determine a lot of what you roleplay - just like combat can influence roleplay. So it depends on what you mena by facet.

    Okay first of, if you are interested in making your own TRPG please move away from systems like Lumen, 5e DnD and PBtA, look at systems like Savage Worlds, World Of Darkness, Chronicles of Darkness, FATE, Fudge system, Call of Cthulhu, Shadow of the Demon Lord (which is a nice improvement on the base D20 system), Traveler, 7th Sea, Symbaroum (the not 5e version of the game), Mutant Year Zero, Forbidden Lands, Legend of the Five Rings, there is a myriad of varied and interesting systems with unique mechanics and ideas to be inspired for that aren't 5e, PBtA or Lumen, as to why i speak against this systems is because 5e doesn't work for anything but 5e despite whatever 5e fans say about, PBtA is a system that is incredibly flawed and make for stale characters in a long term campaign as characters are bound to their playbooks in every interation of this system and it always end up falling short and Lumen is quite honestly a mess.

    I think those pillars are really that meaningful. Sure, D&D is built around them, but honestly they seem only interesting if one whats to create a sandbox simulation world, the moment one has a very different kind of experience in mind none of those might be relevant (yes, not even the RP aspect).

      Well at that point it's not a ttrpg, it's just a board game. Which is fine if that's what you want to make, but ttrpg's require roleplaying to be considered a ttrpg (table top Role Playing game).

    • @nowayjosedaniel
      @nowayjosedaniel 9 місяців тому

      @@enthurian100Let's be honest here: a large percentage of D&D games are combat exclusive with no roleplaying. In fact it is extremely common for players to just always play themselves, no matter what. So no, a ttrpg doesnt require roleplaying. D&D 5e is a great example of this despite its shitty combat.

    SPOILER, DONT READ IF YOURE READING MISTBORN SAGA I'm an atheist and read the first three books in the mistborn saga. Actually from the first book on, I felt like religion was glorified and equated with hope, which isn't true, since you can have hope without faith in some god. Then at the end I was really irritated by the notion of religions containing the knowledge of humankind, where in fact science contains the knowledge of humankind. So when I went on Sandersons Wiki page after that, I was not surprised at all. Maybe he is quite good at representing different religions and how they get along. But imo his belief is spilled all over the books and as an atheist, this is quite a severe drawback.

    • @banehelsing7541
      @banehelsing7541 Рік тому

      I totally agree with this. I’m not Atheist, thought I’d mention this beforehand, but I totally feel the same way. The only thing I’d add is that Brandon Sanderson has mentioned his faith on several occasions in some of his lectures/classes here on UA-cam and I have a mixed feeling about it. On one hand, it is quite off-pudding to say that you’re Christian as a teacher in a class setting, mainly because there is a stigma with organized religion in combination with schooling. And on the other, it warns me to be fully aware of possible religious dogma unintentionally or intentionally in his writing. He has also mentioned that he hopes he brings positivity to his readers, when asked in interviews, especially/specifically in response to dark fantasy vs heroic fantasy and why he chooses the later. In this case he doesn’t normally mention his “faith”, but one can assume what’s he’s insinuating there, and it can make some people uneasy. In my own humble opinion, there’s a time and place to mention certain aspects of your personal life, where I see no issues with writers who are Christian, but, you do have to be very careful how you market yourself to a general audience who aren’t collectively Christians, and sprinkling in mentions of your faith, without reason and randomly. This isn’t the best way to go about it as it can appear or be misinterpreted as preachy and turn people off. P.S./Edit: I’m not an avid Brandon Sanderson reader but I have watched many of his material on social media, and I trust his story structure based upon the recommendations of others. It’s funny because even before I found out about Brandon Sanderson’s personal life, I wasn’t too much interested in reading his novels after I have skimmed over his published works. His overall style is very different from what I normally look for in fantasy, so with that being said my opinion on his work does come from a place of criticism that really isn’t about religion. But to tack on the aspects discussed beforehand just doesn’t make me that much more eager to invest time in reading his series.
